The Art Museum of Southeast Texas will present “Darrell Troppy: Femme Vogue” in the Sue Mann Weisenfelder Community Gallery. An opening reception is set for 5-7 p.m., Nov. 13.

The works in the exhibition include never before seen drawings from the Troppy Estate.

Born in April 1961 in Harlingen, Troppy’s artistic career spanned decades.

Troppy firmly believed in lifelong learning, whether that was in the formal classroom setting or in his personal studio. He studied under several painters, including Jerry Newman at Lamar University, as well as taught high school art for several years.

Troppy developed a personal visual language that is easily recognizable. His interest in the human form and love of theater is evident in the many sketches, drawings, and paintings he created of ballerinas, people in fantastical costumes, and Mardi Gras celebrations.

This subject matter is juxtaposed to his fondness for using hearts in his artwork and coincides with his oft quoted statement, “Someone else can paint the ugly. I will always find happiness in seeing the smile on someone’s face when they see my work.”
