The Jefferson Theatre in Beaumont will host its annual “13 Nights of Halloween” movie series throughout October, giving moviegoers an opportunity to watch horror and Halloween-themed films in the historic theater.
Every evening from Oct. 19 to Halloween, the Jefferson will show “The Sixth Sense,” “Corpse Bride,” “Shaun of the Dead,” The Lost Boys,” “The Phantom of the Opera” (a silent film with organ concert), “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “The Addams Family,” “Get Out,” “The Little Shop of Horrors,” “Scream,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Coco” and “Halloween.”
Rowan Rodriguez, Port Arthur junior, said event provides an option for people looking for Halloween activities throughout October.
“I really do enjoy them, but I think it’s a good thing to do, especially around Halloween time, because, typically, there’s not that many family-friendly events that people can go to besides trunk-or-treats and stuff,” he said.
Rodriguez said the Jefferson offers something different from larger theaters.
“Cinemark and Regal will do anniversary showings, but this happens specifically for Halloween, and it happens throughout practically the whole month,” Rodriguez said. “So, I think that’s different, at least to me, in comparison to something like Cinemark or Regal.
“I will say that Jefferson also provides it at such a small cost a lot of the time, and makes it extremely affordable for people, including the concessions. If you compare that to something like Regal, you’ll probably end up saving more money.”
Rodriguez said weekday screenings are important because his work schedule makes attending weekend Halloween events difficult.
“I typically go on Halloween or during the weekday because I can’t really do weekends, because I work at the Haunted Hotel,” Rodriguez said. “That also makes it good for people like me that can’t really do things over the weekend, but they provide it throughout the weekdays as well.”
The atmosphere of the screenings is part of what makes the experience enjoyable, Rodriguez said.
“You’ll see people dressed up in their costumes, and overall, it is a pretty good, enjoyable experience,” he said. “Everyone’s pretty respectful, but also, like, everyone’s loud and cheers and stuff. It makes it really fun, like how the movies used to be.”
Mary O’Malley, Beaumont junior, said this will be her first year attending the screenings.
“I used to see the Instagram posts for the Halloween movies every year and never really had an opportunity to attend,” she said.
O’Malley bought tickets for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which she said she expects to be a unique experience at the historic Jefferson.
“I’m really just so excited,: she said. “I feel like it’s a really intentional event being held since the Jefferson and ‘Rocky Horror’ both have a bit of age on them.”
