Lamar athletics has been busy the past two weeks, with seven sports teams in action. Most teams have been on their long away slate, but women’s soccer has held it down at home.
The Lady Cards hosted Texas A&M-San Antonio, Sept. 10, and UTRGV, Sept. 17, at the Lamar University Soccer Complex. The ladies routed TAMUSA 13-0, tying the school record for most goals in a game. Ten different players scored for the Cards.
The ladies opened up conference play with a 1-0 win against UTRGV. The game-winning goal came from senior Kamryn Harvey with 10 seconds left. Their next match is at Northwestern State, Sept. 24.
Women’s volleyball has played eight games the past two weeks, going 3-5 across that stretch. Their wins came against Southern University, Jackson State University and Prairie View A&M University.
Volleyball’s most recent games came in the Lamar Invitational where they lost to North Dakota, the University of Louisiana-Monroe, and Sam Houston State University. Their next game is Sept. 24 against LSU New Orleans in McDonald Gym.
Big Red’s football squad is off to a hot 2-1 start with their most recent win coming at the University of Idaho, Sept. 12, in Moscow, Idaho, 23-17. The Cardinals were led by junior running back Jojo Uga’s 105 yards in 15 rushes.
In the aftermath of the win, freshman Andres Sandoval was named Southland Conference special teams’ player of the week after going 3-4 on field goals and 2-2 on extra points. Their next game is at Nicholls State on Sept. 26.
Men’s and women’s cross country ran their second meet at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Sept. 11. The men’s 8k race was led by senior Adrian Hahn Vadstein, who placed 23rd with a 25:12.3.
The women’s 5k race was led by senior Ashton Rainey, who placed sixth with a 17:27.9. Both teams finished top 10. Their next meet is at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Sept. 26.
Women’s golf teed off at the Lady Clerico in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Sept. 15. Junior Matilda Samervong won the individual tournament title, becoming the first Cardinal since 2023 to complete the feat. She finished the tournament with eight birdies and 24 pars. The teams’ next tournament is The Robbie in Franklin, Tennessee, Oct. 12.
Men’s tennis played at the Jake Frederick Islander Opener in Corpus Christi, Sept. 13. The Cards were led by junior Louis Drapeau and freshman Dan Milburn. The two brought home titles in the Orange Flight and Gold Flight. Their next match starts Oct. 2 at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in Beaumont.
Women’s tennis opened their season in Natchitoches, La, Sept. 19. The ladies were led by junior Arina Gudovskaya after she brought home two flight championships, winning the singles title and a doubles title with sophomore Jevrosima Mitic. The Cards next match starts Sept. 25 at the UL Lafayette Invitational.
