Welding her future

Text and photo by Presleigh Peveto

Hope Ryder has always been drawn to hands-on work that allows her to build something from the ground up. She first discovered her passion for welding in high school. "I was able to take a class in high school and after that I wanted to learn more because I really enjoyed it," the construction management major says. What started as a single class quickly turned into a long-term commitment and a skill she continues to develop. "I have been doing welding for five years now because I started in 2021 and now I do it for fun and try to take on different projects," she says. The Port Neches sophomore says that welding is more than just a technical ability, it is a way to reset. "My favorite part of welding is being able to focus on one thing because when the helmet is on you can only see what you are working on, and it makes my brain slow down," she says. The quiet concentration and steady precision needed in welding give her a sense of control. As she continues studying construction management, Hope's welding experience provides a solid foundation and insight into the field she plans to build her future in.
