The Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas Foundation will host the Boomtown BBQ Bash, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 18 at the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum. The event will include different barbecue vendors who will compete based on audience feedback.

“Our goal is to expand our behavioral health services, specifically within our hospital,” Payton Ferguson, associate administrator at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas, said.

The proceeds will help expand access to behavioral health services and support patients who are in need of mental health care, while also raising community awareness about the importance of accessible treatment programs in Southeast Texas, Jeff Dyson, vice president of M&D Supply, the event’s sponsor, and a community hospitals board member, said.

With mental health becoming a growing topic of concern in Southeast Texas, the fundraiser aims to support the program while bringing the community together through food and entertainment, Dyson said.

“A recent health study showed access to behavioral health is needed,” he said. “That’s a call to the community that we have a problem here that needs to be addressed.”

Pre-sale tickets are $17 for adults and $7 for children, with admission at the door costing $20 for adults and $10 for children. Children under 5 are free. Dyson said funds will also be raised through a raffle. Tickets are available online at bhsetfoundation.org, and in person at the event. Tickets are $10 or six for $50.

“What we’re giving away is a Big Green Egg package which is probably worth $1,500,” Dyson said.

Attendees members will also have the chance to enjoy barbecue and activities, Lily Norman, museum program coordinator, said.

“There’s going to be a lot of opportunities to hang out with your friends, but also to eat good food,” Norman said. “It gives you time to eat and have fun.”

The event will also feature live music and a kid’s zone.  Ferguson said she hopes the BBQ will become an annual event.

“The goal is being able to have this as a kind of staple in the Southeast Texas community and making it a yearly thing,” Ferguson said.
