Students elect new SGA leaders for the 2026–2027 academic year

Carsen Barrett has been elected president of Lamar University’s Student Government Association for 2026-27, in elections held April 7-8. He will serve alongside vice president-elect Briley O’Connor.

Ashton Rainey was elected senior class senator, Elizabeth Brankin will represent the junior class, and Brittanny Sherman will serve as sophomore class senator.

The newly elected officers will take their oaths at the Toast to Leadership ceremony, April 22, and will officially begin their terms on June 1.

Barrett said the role represents both an opportunity and a responsibility to give back to the university that shaped his college experience.

“I came to Lamar pretty unfocused,” Barrett said. “As I got more involved, I realized how much the university has given me, and this felt like the best way to give back.”

Barrett said his upcoming term will center on building a stronger sense of culture and connection across campus, particularly through student involvement.

“Culture is the big one,” he said. “I want students to be involved across the board — athletics, organizations, events — and to feel like they’re part of something bigger.”

Barrett also emphasized making SGA more visible and accessible to students by increasing outreach and maintaining a consistent presence.

“It’s about showing face and making sure every group feels seen and heard,” he said. “I want everyone to feel supported.”

While excited about the opportunity, Barrett said he acknowledges the expectations that come with leading a student body of more than 17,000.

“There are definitely some nerves,” he said. “There’s a lot of expectation, and I don’t take that lightly. But I’m ready to meet and exceed those expectations.”

Looking ahead, Barrett said he hopes his presidency will leave a lasting impact on campus culture and student life.

“I’m ready to rock and roll,” he said. “Let’s make this something memorable.”
