Cardinalpalooza set for April 5

Lamar University will host “Cardinalpalooza,” 4- 9 p.m., April 5, beginning in the Setzer Student Center and concluding with a concert in the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center.

The event will include carnival games, a student organization fair, food and beverages, as well as a performance by rapper The Mexican OT, best known for his 2023 hit, “Johnny Dang.”

Student Government Association President Ethan Ellis said getting the musical performance was difficult, but exciting.

“It’s just a long process, but after trial and error, we were able to get him,” Ellis said. “We are really excited at the fact that he is kind of a local artist, so Houston natives may be familiar with his music and be a little bit more encouraged to see him.”

Ellis said he is excited to see the students bond and come together.

“It is not typical that we have a large amount of student engagement over the spring semester,” he said. “We’re really excited to welcome the campus and surrounding campuses like LIT, Lamar State Port Arthur and Lamar Orange that will also be eligible to attend this event. I am excited to see our campuses come together and show what Southeast Texas is about.”

This year’s Cardinalpalooza is one of the biggest events in Lamar’s rich history, Ellis said.

“I feel like it’s a landmark event,” he said. “We had our Homecoming performance, which was a very big hit, but ‘Lamar University isn’t just a one semester school. It’s a big step into the future of the spring semester still engaging students. Hopefully, we can get it bigger and better next year and over the years to come.”

Ellis said he hopes students can take this event to relax and blow off steam before exams start to ramp up.

“We really wanted to build this week up into this final event,” he said. “We wanted to show that even towards the end of the semester we can still have fun and burn off some steam.”
