News events need careful scrutiny

Headline after headline, front page to back, the news is filled to the brim with political change. It seems as if there is a new executive order every day and we are only a few months into President Donald Trump’s term.

We see people avoiding the news altogether due to the information overload. However, it is extremely important that we continue to stay aware and informed about what is going on around us, no matter how overwhelmed we may be.

The Department of Government Efficiency is implementing cuts seemingly everyday, and we need to be aware of them.

We cannot settle for skimming headlines and considering ourselves informed. While some major cuts through DOGE have been covered, there are some that have not made it into widespread news outlets thus far. If we only focus on major headlines, we might not know that the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration faced cuts, or that 1,000 employees were terminated from the National Park Service.

However, diving deep also means we need good media literacy practices. Sources may be biased or misinformed. We, as readers, need to spot the signs in order to decide when we can believe what we read.

All in all, we need to refuse to become overwhelmed and unaware of the world around us. A lot is changing, and we need to read all about it.
