Get ready for a day bursting with vibrant colors, flavor and fun. Brooks-Shivers Dining Hall will host Color-Ful, an event dedicated to nutrition, giving back, and self-expression, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 8.
The celebration highlights the importance of healthy, colorful foods while offering students the chance to participate in hands-on activities, giveaways, and a grand prize competition.
“While eating more vegetables and fruit is always a good idea, focusing on eating a variety of colors will increase your intake of different nutrients to benefit various areas of your health,” Katey Davidson, registered dietitian, said.
The event will feature do-it-yourself stations full of powerful reds, energetic greens, blues and purples where students can prepare a variety of dishes.
Interactive activities designed to spark creativity will be available outside the dining hall.
Attendees can decorate care packages for Boys’ Haven, a residential facility that houses young men and boys in the foster care system.
“Every Joy-Ful event we hold, we choose a non-profit to support,” Jennifer Melnychuk, marketing manager for dining services at Lamar University, said. “For Color-Ful, we chose the Boys Haven of Beaumont so that we can help at risk youth when they need help the most. This non-profit works hard to give solace and guidance to young men who have not had an easy road. We not only have an opportunity to help the current residents with care packages now, but we can also help spread the word on what they are doing and how the whole community of Beaumont can help.”
Other features include free snow cones, food-themed diamond art, tie-dying a canvas bag, and henna tattoos.
“With this being our first ever Color-Ful event, we cannot wait to present students with the opportunity to get creative and embrace the festive spirit while exploring the vibrant colors that food has to offer,” Bryce Sinclair, senior director for dining services, said.
The first 10 students to swipe their CardinalOne cards will receive a special goodie bag packed with snacks from our various markets on campus, each one inspired by a different color of the rainbow.
Students will be able to participate in a blindfold Skittles challenge where those who correctly guess the Skittles flavors will be entered into a drawing to win an iPad.
The event is first-come, first-served, so students are encouraged to arrive early.
