Lady Cards dominate UL Monroe in 71-60 win

The Lamar University women’s basketball team beat the University of Louisiana-Monroe, 71-60, Dec. 7, at the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center.

The Lady Cardinals are on a three-game home winning streak and have won the last two games after going 2-3 to start the season.

LU saw three players score in double-digits, with guard Sabria Dean leading the team with 15 points on seven field goals made. Lamar guard T’Aaliyah Miner scored 10 points and LU forward Akasha Davis scored her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Davis scored Lamar’s first six points of the game for a 6-3 lead. ULM kept fighting but Lamar never conceded the lead throughout the game.

Lamar subbed out Davis in the second quarter after receiving two fouls, allowing Bebe Galloway and Taliah Hill to play the five throughout the second quarter. LU gave up two free-throws to ULM dropping the lead to four but quickly responded with a 9-2 run.

Lamar entered the second half with a five point lead (35-30) but saw Davis get benched again after picking up her third foul which led to ULM cutting the lead to 37-36. Galloway and Hill stepped up and combined for seven rebounds while Lamar’s offense went off on a 20-9 run. LU guard Kamryn Wilson scored all of her six points in the third quarter.  

The Lady Cards’ defense took control after ULM cut the lead down to nine to start off the fourth quarter. LU allowed ULM to score just three field goals in the fourth. Davis dominated the paint, bringing down six rebounds and scoring four points to seal the Lady Cardinals’ victory.

Lamar are now 4-3 overall and are set to play UT-Rio Grande Valley in their first Southland Conference game of the season, Dec. 14, in the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg at 2 p.m.
