Veterans Day is Nov. 11, recognizing and honoring veterans who have served in the military. Every year, Lamar University hosts events for the holiday.
Director of Strategic Initiatives, Wilma Jackson, said the number one reason these events are held is to recognize and thank the veterans for their service, but also to let our them know what resources are available for them at Lamar.
“Sometimes certain groups on campus, they feel like they may be forgotten about or maybe they’ve experienced some isolation,” she said. “But this is a way to let them know, ‘Hey, we're here. We see you. We hear you.’”
The week of events kick of Nov. 7 with the Cardinal Care Resource Fair Tabling from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Setzer Student Center Ballroom.

The Office of Strategic Initiatives and the Veterans Day Program Planning Committee will host a VET talk, similar to a TED talk, where veterans will share their stories and experiences in the Galloway Auditorium from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12.
On Nov. 12-13 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m., there will be free Veterans Day t-shirts being passed out outside of the Health & Human Services Building.
There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Women Veterans and First Responders Wall in front of the Maes building on Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. The wall will be permanently displayed in the second floor.
To wrap up the Veterans Day events, there will be a Lunch on the Lawn at the Brooks-Shivers Dining Hall lawn from 12-2 p.m. Nov. 14. In case of rain, it will be held in the Shelia Umphrey Recreational Center.
“We’re really grateful to have a group of people across campus who are working together to make sure that these events are implemented at Lamar University,” Jackson said. “It’s really something to be proud of.”
