Former president Donald Trump has won the 2024 presidential election with 277 Electoral College votes, as of 11 a.m., Nov. 6. The Republican party also took control of the Senate with 52 seats and the House of Representatives with 218 seats.
Trump’s win is the second time a president has won election in two non-consecutive terms, the first being Grover Cleveland in 1884 and 1892.
Trump won the swing states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia, states he reclaimed after losing them in 2020. He remains locked in close contests with Harris in Michigan, Arizona and Nevada as he looks to pad his Electoral College margin.
Though the Democrats may have won in typical states such as California and New York, Harris underperformed Biden in common Democrat-supporting areas.
Pennsylvania, with its 19 electoral votes, was seen as the must-win state. Trump's margin shifted by five points in both urban Philadelphia, where he got 20% of the vote this time, and in rural Pike county, where he got 62%.
In Trump’s victory speech in Florida at 2:30 a.m., he said his win was the greatest political movement of all time.
“There's never been anything like this in this country, and now it's going to reach a new level of importance because we're going to help our country heal,” he said. “I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president. And every citizen, I will fight for you, for your family and your future. I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve. This will truly be the golden age of America.”
Current Vice President and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, delivered her concession speech at 4 p.m. where she said she is proud of the race she ran.
"While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign—the fight: the fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness, and the dignity of all people," she said. "A fight for the ideals at the heart of our nation, the ideals that reflect America at our best. That is a fight I will never give up."
Trump will be sworn in at the presidential inauguration Jan. 20, 2025.
