50-60% of students for LU’s fall semester are considered to be First-Gen students. From Nov. 4-9, Lamar University’s Division of Student Affairs and Strategic Initiatives will host a week of events in recognition and celebration of these students.
“A large group of our students are First-Gen and so being sure that we recognize that and support them is important,” Instructor Andre Favors said. “All these activities, it’s to share First-Gen stories, it’s to celebrate our successful First-Gen students. It's to provide resources and support for student First-Gen students and others who may need it.”
The events kick off with the First Gen Connections Pop Up Shop from 9-11 a.m. in front of the Office of Strategic Initiatives building Nov. 4. There will be free First-Gen Connections t-shirts and swag, while supplies last.
There will be a College of Business Celebration in the College of Business, room 242 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Nov. 5. Food and refreshments will be provided.
There will be a Coffee and Conversations event in the lobby for the Center for Resiliency in the Cherry Engineering Building from 8-10 a.m. Nov. 6. Students can find information on LU’s First-Gen initiatives, register for door prizes and receive free swag.
On Nov. 7, The Cardinal Care and First-Gen Resource Fair will be held in the Setzer Student Center from 12-2 p.m. Free swag bags will be available while supplies last.
The First-Gen College Celebration Student Awards Luncheon will be held in the Reaud Executive Event Space from 12-1:30 p.m. Nov. 8. First-Gen students will be recognized for their performance and accomplishments.
The events wrap up Nov. 9 with the Virtual First-Gen College Celebration Event at 11 a.m. To participate, email wjackson10@lamar.edu. First-Gen students will also be able to receive door prizes, which will be mailed out after the event is over.
