Baseball:
After landing first place in the Southland Conference regular season, the Lamar baseball team lost in the conference tournament semifinals to McNeese State, 14-4, May 25, in Hammond, La.
The Cardinals got off to a bad start in the Southland Conference Championship tournament by losing the first game to the University of the Incarnate Word. The Cards would bounce back the second game by beating Northwestern State 12-5.
LU would then go on to win the next two games 18-6 and 18-9 reaching the conference semifinal against McNeese State. In the first inning McNeese scored seven runs compared to LU’s one.
Despite Cardinal senior River Orsak breaking a Southland Conference tournament record by scoring his seventh home run in the tournament, the Cardinals lost to McNeese state 14-4. LU finished the season 44-15.
Softball:
The Lady Cards ended their season in fifth place in the Southland Conference regular season earning them a spot in the SLC tournament, where went out early in the double elimination tournament.
Lamar played the University of Incarnate Word for the first game, losing 4-5 in eight innings. In the second game LU played Nicholls State and also lost 4-5 in eight innings.
The Lady Cardinals finished the season 26-25.
Track and Field:
LU’s Brianna Howard and Kenson Tate competed in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. Howard competed in the 200 meters while Tate competed in the long jump.
Tate placed 12th overall with a jump of 7.56 meters as he earned his third All-American second team selection. Tate returned to Eugene to compete for a spot on the United States Track and Field Roster for the Olympic Games in Paris where he placed 22nd overall in the men's long jump with 7.48 meters.
Tate earned Southland Conference male athlete of the year, while Howard received women’s outstanding running events performer.
After a record breaking season, Howard accomplished her goal to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Howard placed 20th place in the 200-meter semifinals where she earned her first All American honors in her career.
Chloe Rodriguez made Lamar history by qualifying for the Olympic trials. Rodriguez became the first ever LU female athlete to participate in the trials. She ultimately placed 32nd overall with a time of 1:00.5 seconds.
