Lamar held a celebration for the university’s centennial on the Brooks Shivers Dining Hall Lawn, March 5. Students made floats, played carnival games, interacted with animals at a small petting zoo, and navigated a wipeout course challenge.
E.J. McMillen, Beaumont senior, managed the inflatable wipeout course and said a lot of people had participated, despite the rain earlier in the day.
“It was a bit iffy if we were going to be able to do it today because of the rain, but thankfully the weather cleared up nice and sunny,” he said. “I've seen some people get across pretty easily and then other people struggle a bit more. I think it really just depends on the person, but one of the things I've seen is either you go straight forward and keep your momentum going through, or you have to be very careful with each shot.”
Students had to traverse a course involving leaping across four large balls without falling.
“It was a little scary,” Christina Turner, Houston sophomore, said. “It was hard to balance at first.”
The petting zoo included sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, and even a tortoise.
Pedro Esquiv, Port Neches freshman, won an insulated lunch box at the strength test game.
“I’m going to give it to my mom since she’s been wanting one for a while.” he said.
