Workshop encourages minorities to enter field of engineering

The college of Engineering will host an expected 150 to 200 area high school counselors and science or mathematics teachers Saturday at a second annual Golden Triangle workshop to encourage minorities to enter the field of engineering.
The workshop Is sponsored by the Golden Triangle National Advisory Council for Minorities in Engineering and the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering.
Registration and a continental breakfast will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the arbor area of the Setzer Student Center, followed by a morning of programs in the Landes Auditorium of the Galloway Business Building. A luncheon will be given at noon in the Spindletop Room of Gray Library.
“The purpose of the workshop is to exchange ideas on programs we’ve been having the last year and a half, and programs we want to present,” said Dr. R.A. McAllister, dean of the College of Engineering and chairman of the Golden Triangle TAME.
The workshop will feature Dr. Charles Rodenberger, associate dean of engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station; Dr. Stan Ebner, dean of the downtown campus, University of Houston; and J.S. Robottom, University of Texas at Austin.
Also participating will be Dr. Richard L. Price, associate professor of mathematics and director of minority recruiting and retention for the College of Engineering; and Dr. McAllister.
Herman Rogers, an engineer at Texaco, will give a slide presentation.
Assisting with the workshop will be the Lamar chapter of the National Society for Black Engineers, formed this fall under the sponsorship of Dr. Price.
