The Lamar men's and women's basketball teams hosted the first McDonald Mayhem, Oct. 30, in the McDonald Gym.
The event was a pre-season pep rally to kick off the men’s and women’s basketball season, and included activities such as a Greek life talent battle, a dunk contest, and a three-point contest.
McDonald Mayhem started with player introductions, before the men’s and women’s teams competed against each other in the three-point contest. The Lady Cards ultimately won the battle.
LU basketball players were not the only ones with a dunk contest, as a children's dunk contest was held and was won by assistant coach Mikhail McLean’s son.
Caillou Collins, Forney senior, won free concessions for a year after making a half-court shot during a fan contest.
“My whole team, everybody who come with me, everybody is getting free glizzies, candy, food whatever you want I got you,” Collins said. “It’s pretty cool. There's a lot of people out here, it’s more than I expected.”
Teams from Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Tau Omega, and Omega Psi Phi won a Greek talent battle with a grand prize of $1,000 for first place won by Omega Psi Phi.
Cardinals Cody Pennebaker and BB Knight competed against each other in a dunk contest won by Pennebaker.
About 300 people attended the event and LU got to show what they have in store for this season.
Lamar forward Errol White said he had fun at the event.
“I thought it was lit, it was all good vibes, everybody was smiling, it was a lot of fun,” he said. “I think we will bring a lot of fans in. We got a new culture, new energy, and everybody is just ready.”
The Lamar men’s basketball team will start their season with an exhibition game against the University of St. Thomas, Nov, 1, in the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center at 7p.m.
The women’s team will kickoff their season with an exhibition game against North American University, Nov, 2, in the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at 6 p.m.
