Bids Completed For New Dorm

October 2, 1953

Construction of Lamar State College of Technology’s first dormitory, a three story U-Shaped building which will accommodate 204 men students, was scheduled to start this week with Robert E. Nesmith, Inc., of Houston as general contractor.

The contract calls for completion in 300 calendar days with a $50 per day penalty for failure to complete within the specified time. If completed on schedule, the dormitory will be ready for occupancy by September, 1954.

The contract was awarded the Newsmith firm at a meeting of the college board of regents on the campus Tuesday.

The construction budget is $409,676. Stone & Pitts of Beaumont, architects, will receive a fee of $24,580. Other building expenses, including government fees, legal fees, Interest on the loan during construction and a reserve for contingencies will total $15,744.

The building actually will cost $783 more than the $450,000 available for conpurposes, the difference to be provided by the college. Funds in the amount of $400,000 will come from a loan from the Federal Housing and Home Finance agency. The College will provide the remainder.

By the time the building has been furnished, total cost probably will exceed $500,000. The dormitory will be built on land recently acquired across East Virginia Street from the campus and will face the present campus. It will be almost exactly across the stress from the president’s home.
