UP places 2nd in Texas APME

The University Press received second place in the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors college, non-daily contest announced Saturday during the conference held in Austin. The Texas APME recognizes excellence in journalism across the state at both professional and collegiate levels.

The University Press placed just behind Tarrant County College’s newspaper “The Collegian” and in front of Baylor University’s newspaper “The Baylor Lariat,” placing it as the smallest campus newspaper to receive the honor.

“I’m really proud of my staff,” Editor-in-Chief Cassandra Jenkins, said. “Among all the schools that ranked, we work with the smallest group and are still able to produce top-notch stories and journalism.”

The contest included the submission of each universities three best overall newspapers from the 2018 calendar year.

“It’s nice to be recognized by not only our peers, but professionals as one of the best overall newspapers in our division,” Jenkins said. “We deserve the award. Our staff works hard, from our editors, to our writers, photographers and advisers. We definitely put our heart and soul into making our school proud and we do that by showing we can compete with the best locally, state-wide and nationally.”
