      Senior guard Brandon Davis poured in a game-high 21 points Wednesday night at the University Center as Lamar University handed Southeastern Louisiana an 83-59 Southland Conference basketball loss. The Cardinals' 24-point victory is their largest ever in Hammond, and gives Lamar its second straight road win over the Lions.

      Twenty-one football players, featuring seven with Southeast Texas ties, make up Lamar University's 2012 National Signing Day recruiting class announced by coach Ray Woodard at a Wednesday afternoon media conference. Wide receivers Garrett Drake of Silsbee and Jayce Nelson of Port Neches-Groves, offensive linemen Joe Persohn of Hardin Jefferson, Jermaine Bowman of West Brook and Bret Treadway of Silsbee and defensive linemen Corbin Carr of Nederland and David Hollyfield of Silsbee will give additional local flavor to the Cardinal team that will represent Lamar during the 2012 season.

    Lamar competing at Birmingham Invitational

    Lamar University's Beatrice Douglas (Silsbee) set a school record for the women's indoor pentathlon at the Birmingham Invitational on Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala. Douglas finished seventh with a total of 3,345 points. She tied for first in the high jump in the pentathlon competition with an effort of 5 feet, 7 inches, the second-best jump in school history.

  • Lamar basketball update

    During the winter break, Lamar's basketball teams stayed busy, playing 18 games combined. Over that span, the men went 6-4 (3-2), putting them in first place in the east division of the SLC. Guard Mike James received the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award three times.

Lamar (10-9 overall, 2-3 Southland) almost squandered a 19-point second-half lead, but held on to make Tidwell just second coach in Lady Cardinals' history to reach the 100-win plateau.
