Lady Lions claw past Lamar

Ang Green scored a season-high 12 points for the Lamar University women's basketball team, but the Lady Cardinals dropped a 69-61 Southland Conference decision to visiting Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday.

Lamar (10-11 overall, 2-5 Southland) raced out to a 7-0 lead a little more than two minutes into the game, but Southeastern Louisiana 7-13, 2-5) withstood the early onslaught and took a 32-27 lead into intermission.

Lamar battled back and took a 58-56 lead on a Brateicka Mock layup with 3:31 remaining in the second half. That lead proved to be short-lived as Southeastern Louisiana went on a 12-0 run over a three-minute span to put the game away.

Southeastern Louisiana outscored Lamar 20-2 on second-chance points, taking advantage of 15 Lamar turnovers.

"We made too many mistakes," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "We have to play better than that."

Taylor Hays had 11 points for Lamar, while Mock added nine points. Lamar's Danielle Heithoff had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Lamar was 21-of-60 (35 percent) from the field. The Lady Cardinals were 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range and 13-of-14 (92.9 percent) from the line.

Latoria Holder led the Lady Lions with 16 points. Jessica Sommers had 12 points in the win, while Aja Gibson and Kelli Jenkins had 11 points apiece.

Lamar returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday with a Southland Conference game at UTSA. That contest will be aired live on LamarCardinals.com.
